Dear Carlos,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Windows Update Support. My name is Viola, and I am glad to work with you. For your reference, the case ID for this service request is SRX1068098588. You can contact me directly by sending an email to v-30viow@mssupport.microsoft.com with the case ID in the subject line.

From the problem description, I understand that the error code 0x80072EE7 was received when trying to install the latest updates. Please feel free to let me know if I misunderstood.

I fully understand the inconvenience this issue has caused. Please be assured that I will do my best to assist you.

This error code is generally caused by one of the following factors:

1. Third party security software conflict.
2. Incorrect DNS settings.
3. Corrupted Windows Update temporary folder.
4. Incorrect network or firewall settings.

We will address some of the more common causes of this issue. It is important that we attempt to connect to the Windows Update web site after each step to confirm whether the resolution has worked. This will prevent us from having to proceed with additional troubleshooting steps and provide us with valuable feedback to further develop our support resolutions for you and our future customers. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Step 1: Check the background programs
==============================
This issue could be caused by third party applications. Let’s first try disabling or uninstalling any third party security applications you may have installed on the computer. Please be advised that this is for troubleshooting purposes only. Once we have resolved the issue, the applications should be re-enabled or re-installed immediately. If the third party security application is determined to be the cause, please contact the vendor for assistance.

You may have a different security application not listed below that could also be causing the issue. Even the firewall might have been running for some time without any problems, new updates may create issues. Here is a list of the most common security applications:

Symantec Norton
McAfee
Zone Alarm
Panda Security
Kaspersky
Sophos Antivirus
Comodo Firewall
AntispamSniper
Webroot Spy Sweeper
Accelerator
Spybot

Once the third party security applications have been disabled or removed, please access the Windows Update web site again. If you encounter problems disabling these programs, we recommend completely uninstalling them, for troubleshooting purposes only. Before uninstalling any application, please enable your Windows Firewall and ensure that you have the CDs or files needed to re-install it.

Let’s now try Windows Update again and see if the issue has been resolved. Please let us know if this step has resolved it. If it has not, please proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Set DNS to obtain IP automatically
================================
This step will help us change the settings in order to obtain an automatic IP address. If you are using a certain IP address and DNS server, please record them first. After trying the following steps, please check if the Internet connection works and if the issue is resolved. If the Internet connection is lost, please revert to the original IP address and DNS server.

1. Click «Start», click «Run», input: «NCPA.CPL» (without quotations) and press «Enter».
2. Right-click the network connection and click «Properties».
3. Click to highlight «Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)» and click «Properties».
4. Check «Obtain an IP address automatically» and «Obtain DNS server address automatically».
5. Click «OK».

Let’s now try Windows Update again and see if the issue has been resolved. Please let us know if this step has resolved it. If it has not, please proceed to the next step.

Step 3: Rename the temporary folder of Windows Update
===========================================
One possible cause is that Windows Update’s temporary folder contains corrupted files. This step will clean its «SoftwareDistribution», which contains the Windows Update History data (DataStore.edb file), downloaded updates’ installation files and other Windows Update components’ files. After renaming this folder, all the files will be automatically recreated, except the Windows Update History data and downloaded updates’ installation files. This will have no negative effect on your computer’s performance.

1. Click «Start», «Run», type: «cmd» (without quotations) and press «Enter». In the command window, type «net stop WuAuServ» (without quotations) and press «Enter».
2. Click «Start», «Run», type: «%windir%» (without quotations) and press «Enter».
3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to Sdold.
4. Click «Start», «Run», type: «cmd» (without quotations) and press «Enter». In the command window, type «net start WuAuServ» (without quotations) and press «Enter».

Note: After resolving this Windows Update issue, please feel free to delete the Sdold file. However, if you would like to keep the Windows Update History data, please copy the DataStore.edb file under C:\Windows\Sdold\DataStore, and paste it back into the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore.

Let’s now try Windows Update again and see if the issue has been resolved. Please let us know if this step has resolved it. If it has not, please proceed to the next step.

Step 4: Perform a clean boot and disable third party services and startup items
===========================================================
Note: Please enable the Windows Firewall to protect the computer from being infected before we perform a Clean Boot.

a. Click «Start», click «Run», type «WSCUI.CPL» then click «OK». This will generate the Windows Security Center application.
b. In the «Windows Security Center» window, click Windows Firewall.
c. Select the option «On (recommended)» to turn on Windows Firewall.

1. Click «Start», click «Run», and in the «Open» line, type in «MSCONFIG» and click «OK».
2. Under the «Service» tab, check «Hide All Microsoft Services», and then click the «Disable All» button. In this way, we can disable all the services which belong to third-party programs.
3. Under the «Startup» tab, click the «Disable All» button.
4. Click «OK».
5. Choose «Yes» to restart the computer.
6. Check «Don’t show this message or launch the system configuration utility when Windows starts».

NOTE: We can check on Normal Startup in the General tab to roll back to Normal Mode.

Then try to update Windows, and check if you still receive the error code. For detailed information, please refer to this Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

You may receive an «Error 0x80072EE2,» «Error 0x80072EE7,» «Error 0x80072EFD,» «Error 0x80072F76,» or «Error 0x80072F78» error message when you try to use the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site

If the issue persists after performing the above steps, please help me collect additional information for further troubleshooting:

How to collect System Information:
===========================
1. Click «Start», go to «Run», type in «MSINFO32» (without quotations) and press «Enter» to start System Information.
2. On the «System Information» window, on the menu bar, click «File», and click «Save as»; save it as an NFO file, such as «system.nfo» to your local Desktop.
3. Locate the file, right-click on it, click «Send To», and click «Compressed (zipped) Folder».
4. Please send it as an attachment to v-30viow@mssupport.microsoft.com.

How to collect the Windows Update log file:
================================
Note: Since there are two Windows Update log files with similar names, please be aware that I am requesting the «WindowsUpdate.log» file without a space in the middle of the name.

1. Click on «Start», «Run» and type «WindowsUpdate.log» (without quotations).
2. Click on «OK». We will see a file named «WindowsUpdate.log».
3. Now click on the «File» menu and then click on the «Save As» and select «Desktop» in the «Save in» option on the top of the window.
4. Click on «Save». The file will be saved to your Desktop. Please send it as an attachment to v-30viow@mssupport.microsoft.com.

However, if the file is unable to be collected by the above steps, we can also use the following method to collect it.

1. Click «Start», «Run», type: «%windir%» (without quotations) and then press «Enter».
2. In the open window, we will see a file named «WindowsUpdate.log».
3. Please send it as an attachment to: v-30viow@mssupport.microsoft.com.

Note: When attaching files to emails, the process will vary depending on the email application being used. While you are composing the email, most applications will provide you with either an «Attach» button or a Paper Clip Icon to click in order to attach a file. After clicking this button/icon you must browse to the file you wish to attach and select it by either double clicking it or clicking it once and then clicking on the «Attach» button.

Please let me know which programs have been recently installed. In addition, is this a home or a work computer? If it is a home computer, does it connect to the Internet directly or through a network device? If it is a work computer, is it in a domain?

Please try my suggestion and let me know the results at your earliest convenience. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to let me know.

I await your response.

Best Regards,

Viola Wang
